Texts and Materials:
Balme & Lawall, Athenaze vol. II (Oxford 1990);
Greek New Testament (4th ed. UBS)
Additional readings and exercises will be provided in handout and online.
Objectives and Requirements:
This course is the third step toward a basic reading knowledge of classical and koine Greek. We begin with a review of essential vocabulary and grammar from previous semesters, and then move on to more complex constructions--subjunctives, indirect statement, etc. After Quiz 2 we will pick up the pace of the grammar survey and dispense with some of the regular readings in Athenaze, in order to read more of New Testament and excerpts from classical authors (Xenophon and Aristophanes). Keep up your practice in pronunciation, reading and responding aloud in Greek. As always, thorough preparation and active participation day-by-day is absolutely essential.
Grading:
The final grade will be the average of 4 quizzes (50%), homework and in-class exercises (25%); and final exam (25%). If you have any questions about your grades, please inquire at once!
Academic Integrity Policy:
All members of the University community share the responsibility and authority to challenge and make known acts of apparent academic dishonesty. Any student detected participating in any form of academic dishonesty in this course will be subject to sanctions as described in the Student Academic Integrity Policies and Procedures, also available at the Reserves Desk in Meyer Library, and in abbreviated form in the MSU Undergraduate Catalog). It is your responsibility to read and fully understand MSU's Student Academic Integrity Policies and Procedures.
Non-Discrimination Policy
MSU is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution, and maintains a grievance procedure incorporating due process available to any person who believes he or she has been discriminated against. At all times it is your right to address inquiries or concerns about possible discrimination to Jana Estergard, Equal Opportunity Officer, Siceluff 296, 417-836-4252. Concerns about discrimination can also be brought to your instructor's attention, and/or to the attention of Dr. Madeleine Kernen, Head of the Modern and Classical Languages Department, CRAG 376.
